Easy Old Fashioned Apple Crisp
Old Fashioned Apple Crisp is a classic dessert that conjures up images of old-fashioned summer picnics; gingham blankets, pitchers of fresh lemonade and tinkling ice cubes, and impatient kids running around waiting for the sun to go down so the fireworks can start. And while it takes time to do the prep work, easy apple crisp is never out of reach as long as you have the right ingredients and the right steps. Easy apple crisp makes for a great dessert anytime, but if we’re sticking to nostalgia, you’ll probably want to make it during the summertime.
In my family, we definitely reserved apple crisp for late spring and summer days, when school was freshly out and time seemed to go a little slower than it did during the rest of the year. My mom would send my dad out to the nearby farmer’s market to pick out some great apples for baking. He’d return home with a large basket teeming with bright red apples, looking so perfect they may as well come out of a fairy tale. He’d stick a few in our fruit bowl and then they would both get to work on peeling, coring, and slicing them up. They would turn on the radio—now that’s old fashioned, nowadays—and hum along while they sliced, diced, and made quick work of the apples.
Sometimes we would watch them work from the living room and pop our heads into the kitchen just long enough to nab a freshly sliced apple piece, and sometimes we’d go off on our own adventures and come back inside just in time to see mom pop the baking dish into the oven. And that was when the absolutely delicious, unforgettable and unmistakable aroma of baked apple crisp would fill practically the entire house.
After it was done, it was practically torturing to watch it sit on the kitchen counter while my mom made us wait for it to cool. Once it went down from “burn your hands piping hot” to “pleasantly warm,” she would start cutting up pieces and serve it on our favorite floral plates. Sometimes we’d eat it by itself—it’s delicious easy apple crisp, you can’t go wrong!—but we also enjoyed it with scoops of cold vanilla ice cream. The contrast between the chilled vanilla ice cream and warm apple crisp is something I won’t forget, and if you have any ice cream in the freezer when you’re making this recipe, feel free to serve up a scoop on your plate once it’s done.
Old Fashioned Apple Crisp has three key elements that make it such a popular and timeless dessert: delicious baked apples, a crispy topping for added crunch, and of course, plenty of sweet, sweet sugar. This recipe is not only a classic recipe designed to hit every note that apple crisp needs, but it’s also an easy Old Fashioned Apple Crisp recipe that even a first-timer can make. If you’re ready to indulge in a quintessential dessert, you’ll definitely want to take a look at this recipe.
